Alissa Tutors
Meet Alissa
Hello! My name is Alissa and I am a Math, English (both writing & reading comprehension), PSAT/SAT/ACT, and College Applications Tutor—or, more generally, a teacher with a passion for helping others succeed through education.
I have loved math since my first meaningful introduction to numbers circa age four—and it's this enduring fascination with all things quantitative that I hope to inspire in others! Predictably, I majored in Math at Binghamton University, where I was also a member of the Scholars Program, a tour guide, and an RA (i.e., Resident Assistant). I credit these latter two activities with sparking my desire to help students navigate the admissions process and alleviate the inevitable stress that comes with plotting out a future course. My undergraduate years were also the formative time during which I discovered my authentic writing voice and aptitude for educating, and subsequently began tutoring Math and English. After receiving my New York State Teaching Certification in Secondary Math, grades 7-12, I worked as a High School Math Teacher on Long Island, a Math Tutor and Regents Prep Instructor for various Long Island agencies, and a PSAT, SAT, and ACT Prep Teacher across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Tutoring privately remained a constant during these early post-graduate years: a means for me to remain engaged in *all* the subjects that fascinate me while having the pleasure of working with students of varied ages and abilities.
Originally approaching private tutoring as a side venture, I never intended to start my own business. However, as my number of clients grew steadily through word of mouth, so did my conviction in my calling as a one-on-one teacher/mentor. Now a full-time tutor, I feel thankful everyday to have a vocation so invigorating and interesting that it (true to the old adage) never feels like work! Having taught in many larger classrooms, I appreciate that I now get to cater all my teaching to the individual, which, in my experience, allows for the greatest growth. And since teaching can't be confined to any one time and setting, I pride myself on being invested in all of my students' holistic well-beings—and on being just a phone/video call or text away whenever a question arises.
Beyond identifying as a teacher in both spirit and trade, I am a proud vegetarian and animal lover who works as a volunteer writer and graphic designer for various rescue organizations. I spend nearly all down time in the company of my oversized rescue dogs (subtext, your pets are more than welcome at our tutoring sessions).
I so look forward to getting to work with you and your family!
